After 30 years of managing resorts from the Caribbean to Alaska, I have put down roots in the smalles incorporated city in Alaska. Bettles (population give or take 26 to 36 depending upon the time of year)is located 35 miles above the Arctic Circle in the interior of Alaska.
Surrounded by the native community of Evansville (they are included in the 26) our geographic location is both isolated and unique.
My life is filled with characters that challenge any work of fiction and adventures that rival Indiana Jones on one of his worst days. Bears roam, the temperature fluxuates from - 60 to + 90 F. Mosquitos grow to gargantuan proportions, but so do flowers (yes, and cabbage).
We own a lodge, Spirit Lights Lodge, that is filled with guests from around the world in the winter. We all stare up at the Northern Lights that light up the sky from October through March and know that there really is still magic left in our lives.
As I am a sometimes writer more by hobby than trade, this is an excellent opportunity to share the daily adventures with a large group of past guests, friends and family with one entry rather than a thousand emails.
